What the Census tells us about Clayton residents, past and present.
Using data from U.S. and New York State Census records, The Clayton History Committee has begun analyzing demographic information about the people who have lived here over the years. This is slow, painstaking work, since we have to go back through photocopied images of the individual pages where the census takers wrote down the information they received from their face-to-face interviews with Clayton residents. So far we have analyzed data from the 1925 New York State Census, the 1930 U.S. Census, and from part of the 1940 U.S. Census.
This is a work in progress. The committee still needs to finish analyzing the 1940 U.S. Census, and then conduct an analysis of the 1950 U.S. Census - the most recent year available due to a 72-year restriction on public access to Census data.
These analyses were produced by Clayton volunteer Diane Ducat, and we are grateful for her outstanding effort on the project so far.
